An Austrian historian; born in Vienna, July 10, 1819; died there, July 31, 1897. He was member of the House of Lords after 1869, and president of the Academy of Sciences after 1879. His life of "Prince Eugene of Savoy" (1858-59) is noteworthy as the first authoritative work on that great leader. Next in importance is the "History of Maria Theresa" (1863-79).
