A German poet and dramatist; born at Rostock, Aug. 24, 1837. Among his dramas, which have been successfully presented in all the principal theatres of Germany, are: "Graf Hammerstein" (1870), "Gracchus" (1872), "Arria and Messalina" (1874), "Kriemhild" (1877), tragedies; "Youthful Love" (1872), and "Natalie" (1878), comedies. He has treated the great social and literary questions of his day in the three novels "Adam's Sons" (1890), "Hermann Ifinger" (1892), and "The Thorny Path" (1894); "Villa Maria" (1902).
