An American Congregational divine and historical writer; father of Oliver Wendell Holmes; born at Woodstock Conn., Dec. 24, 1763; died at Cambridge, Mass., June 4, 1837. He was pastor of the First Church, Cambridge, Mass. He wrote: "Life of Ezra Stiles" (1798); "Annals of America" (enlarged ed. 1829), a work of enduring value; "Memoir of the French Protestants"; etc.
