A phenomenon described by Erb as "patellar tendon reflex." It consists in the spasmodic contraction of the quadriceps femoris produced by a quick stroke upon the patellar tendon when the leg is slightly flexed. Normally it is rarely absent. It is of great diagnostic importance in diseases of the spinal cord.
